Phase Change
Presented as part of the 15th New Expressive Works Residency Cohort Showing, February 23-25, 2024
Phase Change was created by a cohort of movers who trade off facilitating at a local Queer Contact Improvisation (CI) Jam: Robin Ekeya, Leland Hull, Emily Jones, Hannah Krafcik. For us, practicing Queer CI involves tracking assumptions that arise as we dance together and considering where these assumptions have originated from. We came to this residency with curiosities: How do we work as a coequal quartet? How do we tend to one another's differences and intersections during this process? How do we develop this traditionally experiential form into a proscenium performance?
Enacted by a quartet with Air, Water, Earth, and Fire sun placements, this performance toyed with the alchemy of influence. We shared a tarot reading that was as much for our audience as it is for us in order to seed the pot with information that would shape the way our dancing was experienced both inside and out. Past. Present. Future.
