SWITCH
switch was an iterative projected developed between 2018-2020 in collaboration with Emily Jones, feat. musical scores by Mickey Sanchez and myself.
This duet evolved from our discussions about power dynamics and their influence on performance practice. Anchored by our movement in contact, we drew on our shared sense of affinity and also the dissonance in our 1-1 relationship to perform a dance that wanted to be considered in light of the power dynamics that shaped it—as well as our messy identifications with submissiveness, dominance, aggression and care. The three iterations of switch were performed respectively at New Expressive Works (OR) in 2019, Art Klub NOLA (LA) in 2019, and Pieter Performance Space (CA) in 2020.
We are grateful for the generous support received for this work from New Expressive Works Residency Program (Portland, OR), the Sou’wester Artist Residency Program (Longview, WA), and Art Klub NOLA (New Orleans, LA).
My time in residency at Art Klub Nola was supported with funds from the Oregon Arts Commission..
